Kuchipudi - A Narrative Complete Dance Form

Kuchipudi Dance needs no introduction. Kuchipudi is as ancient as Natya sastra. It is one such unique form of art, which is a tasteful blend of both grace and vigor, performed to classical Carnatic music. In ancient times, the Kuchipudi style of dance was in the form of dance dramas, the main purpose being to inculcate divine ecstasy which invokes immortal bliss and brings one closer to the path of salvation .It is strictly classical in nature incorporating Lasya, Thandava and Abinaya in the interpretation of Slokas. It incorporates Samyutha and Asamyutha Hasthas, Karana, Chari, Angahara, Mandala, Nrutha Hasthas etc. Kuchipudi dance is the only dance form where all the four Abhinayas (Angika, Vachika, Aaharya and Satvica) are given equal importance. The use of Vachikabhinayam is a special feature in the Kuchipudi dance style. The Dancer not only merely dances but also acts with gestures as well as words. The Kuchipudi is a dance-drama of Nritta, Nritya and Natya, thus making it a Narrative Complete Dance Form. The Nritta consists of teermanams and jathis, the Nritya of Sabdams, and the Natya of acting with Mudras for the songs. Thus kuchipudi is a complete dance - dramas as conceived by Bharata Muni, in which conventional and realistic forms of acting are happily blended.

Carnatic Vocal

Carnatic music or Karnataka sangeetam is a system of music commonly associated with the southern part of the Indian subcontinent, with its area roughly confined to four modern states of India: Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. It is one of two main subgenres of Indian classical music that evolved from ancient Hindu traditions. The main emphasis in Carnatic music is on vocal music; most compositions are written to be sung, and even when played on instruments, they are meant to be performed in gayaki (singing) style. Carnatic music is mainly sung through compositions, especially the kriti (or kirtanam). Carnatic music is usually performed by a small ensemble of musicians, consisting of a principal performer (usually a vocalist), a melodic accompaniment (usually a violin), a rhythm accompaniment (usually a mridangam), and a tambura, which acts as a drone throughout the performance.

In our school, while covering all elements of Carnatic music, we focus on carnatic music syllabus that is taught in Pottisreeramulu Telugu University, Hyderabad, Telangana, India to prepare our students for University's certification program when they are ready, which would typically take 3 to 5 yrs once they start training.
